Regarding “Desert:”

stellarsquid:

I, like so many else, was pretty disappointed to hear potentially anti-gay lyrics coming out of Jesse Lacey’s mouth.

But thankfully after a second listen, it’s very clear that Jesse is not singing these words as Jesse. He’s singing as a father – a very protective and abusive one literally using fear of God and hatred to raise him to be a strong man, not “an abomination.”

The lyrics upsetting so many are as follows:

“I seen those boys kissing boys with their mouth in the street
But I raised my son to be a righteous man,
I made it clear to him what fear of god means.”

Desert is actually a really solid ode to daddy issues and the horrible ways parents raise their children. Particularly – parents raising their children with a literal fear of God.
