This is Stefan putting Damon first. But it’s not just Elena that he’s giving up. Stefan doesn’t want to be a bad person. He doesn’t want to kill people and he doesn’t want to enjoy killing people — both of which being a vampire is expected to entail. He fights that and he fights the guilt that comes with slipping up, and he wears that guilt like a reminder of why he has to keep trying to fight his bloodlust. For decades he works on this, tries to make himself a better person, and every day he fights it.}
